Sweat Gland Suction
Sweat gland suction is a hyperhidrosis treatment which is most effective against axillary hyperhidrosis (armpit sweating), it is so effective against other types of sweating It is a new technique which comes from liposuction, but instead of fat being sucked out it is the sweat glands which are sucked out. During the procedure an estimated 90% of the sweat glands are removed.
What is the procedure of sweat gland suction
Generally patients do not require multiple visits as a preliminary examination is not needed. A local anesthetic is applied to the armpit region. Then small incisions are made above and below the armpit, and the sweat glands are removed using quick suction. This procedure generally takes between one hour and one and half hours. Normally patients can leave straight after the procedure. Potentially even going back to work, though it is generally recommended to take the day off.
How effective is sweat gland suction?
A study was done to measure the efficacy of sweat gland suction as a axillary hyperhidrosis treatment. In the study the sweat rates and satisfaction of patients was measured. These were measured after the surgery for a twelve month period with 28 patients who has axillary hyperhidrosis. The sweat rates wear measured using semi quantitative gravimetry, and a questionnaire determined the patients satisfaction levels with the procedure. It was found that there was a 58% reduction in sweat rate while in a resting state and an 85% reduction where aerobic exercise was being undertaken. When the group of people were separated into three groups based on there baseline sweat rate it was found that the people who benefited the most were the ones who also sweat the most. From these results it can be seen that the relapse rate is low for this type of procedure. The study can be found at pubmed.
